A general health check-up can identify potential concerns before they become more difficult to manage. You do not need to feel seriously ill before visiting a healthcare professional. Persistent symptoms, changes in your body or an overdue screening may all indicate that it is time to make an appointment.

1. You Are Constantly Tired

Occasional tiredness is normal, particularly after poor sleep or a demanding week. However, fatigue that continues despite sufficient rest may require investigation.

Persistent tiredness can have many causes, including stress, nutritional deficiencies, sleep problems, medication or an underlying health condition.

2. Your Weight Has Changed Unexpectedly

Unexplained weight loss or gain should not be ignored, especially when it occurs without changes to your diet or activity levels.

Weight changes may be related to hormonal conditions, medication, stress, digestive problems or other health concerns. The NHS advises consulting a doctor if you continue losing weight without changing your diet or exercise habits.

3. You Experience Frequent Headaches

Headaches may be caused by dehydration, stress, eye strain, poor posture or inadequate sleep. If they become more frequent, severe or different from your usual headaches, arrange a medical assessment.

Keep a record of when the headaches occur, how long they last and any other symptoms you experience.

4. Your Sleep Has Changed

Difficulty falling asleep, waking repeatedly or feeling exhausted after a full night’s sleep can affect your physical and mental wellbeing.

A health check-up can help identify possible causes, such as stress, medication, sleep apnoea or lifestyle factors.

5. You Have Ongoing Digestive Problems

Persistent stomach pain, bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea or changes in bowel habits should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Seek medical advice promptly if you notice blood in your stool, black stools, unexplained vomiting or weight loss. Mayo Clinic

6. You Feel Short of Breath

Breathlessness after intense activity can be expected, but unexplained shortness of breath during normal activities requires medical attention.

Breathing difficulties may be associated with respiratory problems, heart conditions, anxiety, anaemia or low fitness levels. Sudden or severe breathlessness requires urgent medical care.

7. You Notice a New Lump or Physical Change

A new lump, swelling, skin change or unusual mark should be examined, even if it is not painful.

Many physical changes are harmless, but only a qualified healthcare professional can properly assess them. Mention any changes in existing moles, persistent sores or unusual bleeding during your appointment.

8. Your Mood Has Changed

Ongoing sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss of interest or difficulty concentrating can affect your health and daily functioning.

Mental health forms part of general healthcare. A check-up provides an opportunity to discuss these changes and identify appropriate support or treatment.

9. You Have a Family History of Illness

A family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or certain cancers may increase your risk of developing similar conditions.

Your healthcare professional can recommend suitable screening based on your age, medical history and individual risk factors.

10. You Cannot Remember Your Last Check-up

Some health conditions develop without noticeable symptoms. High blood pressure, for example, may only be identified when it is measured. World Health Organization

Regular health checks may include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and other screenings based on your age, health history and risk profile.

Make Your Health a Priority

A general health check-up provides an opportunity to discuss symptoms, review medication and assess important health risks. Early assessment does not always mean something serious is wrong, but it can provide reassurance or allow treatment to begin sooner.

Seek urgent medical assistance for severe chest pain, sudden weakness, difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting or other sudden and serious symptoms.
